Art
Clare Woods Academy is creative - very much so! Art classes are generally small having no more than 4/5 students at a time. The students are able to work within the dictates of the assignments to develop their pictures and shape their sculptures to complete something uniquely their own in one-of-a-kind accomplishments.
The art curriculum addresses all the elements
of art (shape, color, tone, line, texture, etc.)
and design principles (balance, unity, proportion, rhythm, etc.). Each is reviewed several times from different perspectives and for different characteristics.
Some of the other benefits of providing art to our student are as follows:
- Art is used to enable students to act on our character education emphasis.
- Art can make lessons that grow out of classroom goals to be more meaningful: art helps students address the science of the four seasons in lower grades; and, art can both precede and follow lessons in higher grades with projects in areas such as Egyptology, astronomy, and plant structures.
- And, art benefits everyone by helping students who are learning to focus, to follow directions, begin to master control of tools and materials, and to concentrate on sequence and placement.
Art makes learning more meaningful as it incorporates creativity and imagination into the classroom curriculum and we are delighted by the way CWA students confidently draw upon their past experiences when beginning new projects. Lastly, we try to provide them with a sense of internal affirmation that comes with their success.
Music
Students will be given the opportunity to respond to music through voice and body movements. The process of discovery will include movement, song and instrument exploration. They will build a foundation in music education while refining and discovering motor skills. Musical concepts explored will include melody, rhythm, dynamics, form, and mood. General music will also include basic keyboard instruction.
Intermediate and high school aged students, who display appropriate readiness skills may be invited to participate in choir.
Further music enrichment activities will be offered during Club on Fridays.
An all-school musical program will be presented in December and April.
