It is the goal of the Life Skills curriculum to prepare students at CWA to function more independently, responsibly, and age-appropriately in all aspects of their daily lives. The use of technology, role-playing, and multi-sensory teaching methods emphasize personal adequacy, social and vocational readiness, and self-help skills necessary
for
the students to live as independently as possible. The Life Skills teachers work collaboratively with classroom teachers, IEP staff and other related services teachers
to provide an enriched and cohesive program focused on the development of these skills.
The content areas for the program are Mental and Emotional Health, Family Life and Health, Physical Development and Health, Nutrition, Personal Health and Safety, First Aid, and Environmental Health Management. A primary mission of the Life Skills program is to foster a climate of wholesome interpersonal relationships among our students and to further their academic progress to attain goals set forth in their individual IEP’s.
Another primary mission is for our students to be able to affectively advocate their needs
in different environments (community, home, school) in order to better cope with all life situations that arise.
