When students move from the Primary Level classrooms to the Intermediate Level, they usually find that they must start to assume greater responsibility for themselves, their actions,
and their assignments. The ages of the students in the Intermediate Level ranges from 12 to 16 yrs.
of age. Emphasis is on increasing independence. Academics are stressed to prepare for eventual placement in the high school or vocational high school track.
Related services consisting of speech, occupational therapy, and counseling continue
to be available to students, with individual, small group, and classroom instruction.
All students at the Intermediate Level continue to receive physical education, music, art, library, and life skills classes. Emphasis is placed on skills needed for their present
and future education and life after school.
Life Skills classes meet several times weekly in order to provide greater opportunity
for actual community experiences. Cooking, shopping, budgeting, grooming, and health and safety issues are some of the issues addressed in this extensive curriculum.
As students progress through the Intermediate Level, they grow in the knowledge
to better help them realize their full potential and sense of independence. By the time
a student is ready to move on to the high school level it is usually clear whether the best fit is the academic emphasis curriculum or the functional/vocational curriculum. |
