Learning to work within guidelines while also exploring options of their own choosing is particularly important for our student population. The Clare Woods Occupational Therapy Department supports classroom staff by providing strategies to help each student reach his potential optimizing functional and academic abilities.
We assess strengths and challenges in the areas of:
- Gross Motor Skills for movement and coordination of the entire bod
- Written Communication Skills: printing, cursive, keyboarding skills, Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS) and assistive technology
- Sensory Integration: improving the ability to interpret and organize sensory information from the environment. Using adaptations and demonstrating stress reduction techniques to promote an overall sense of wellbeing.
- Environment Analysis to enhance attention and learning during functional, vocational and academic tasks.
Our OT curriculum offers a variety of programs to our students. We are very fortunate to have an official Squeeze Machine designed by Temple Grandin that provides our students with the opportunity to receive proprioceptive input (deep organizing pressure) in an appropriate and self-directed manner at regular intervals throughout the school day.
