Departments - Vocational

Clare Woods Academy Vocational students devote their time to learning the skills necessary to transition to productive adult life. During the school day they study functional academics, learn to take care of themselves, and learn to work. Caring for oneself, getting around in the community, accessing community facilities, and self-advocacy are competencies that are acquired through the Independent Living Skills Curriculum. Problem solving, strong work ethic, and acceptable social interaction are some of the vital skills that are taught through this program.

Clare Woods students learn to work by participating in the school work program and by involvement in the Community Work experience. Students are first assessed for interest, aptitude, and work site preferences between the ages of 14 and 16 years. From ages 15 to 18, hands-on experiences are provided by “in school” jobs such as working in the dining room, performing custodial duties, helping with office tasks, and completing work center jobs provided by community clients.

Depending upon their abilities, students may transition to community work experience at 16 to 21 years of age. Placements might be in:
retail, maintenance, library paging, custodial assistance, animal care, beauty salon assistance, greenhouse work, and restaurant job areas. They may eventually find similar jobs within their own communities.

The Transition Program is provided to help the students achieve independent living when formal education ends. Students and parents visit and evaluate available adult living facilities and, if necessary, supported working placements. The student’s Transition Plan builds toward this outcome beginning at 14 ½ years of age. Each year it is reevaluated and adapted as necessary to accommodate the student’s progress.
